Yangzhou is a city of beautiful scenery and history. Yangzhou has a long history of approximately 2,500 years. Since long ago, it has been blessed with excellent water transportation. The Huaihe river, the Jiangsu Dayunhe canal, and the Yangtze river flow gently in the north, central China, and the south. Yangzhou has a close historical relationship with Japan such as seen in the case of the Monk GANJIN (JIANZHEN in Chinese; 688-763), who was born in Yangzhou and is said to be one of the founders of Japanese Buddhism.
