In case of emergency -Communicating After a Disaster-

When a disaster strikes, many people try making telephone calls all at once, making it difficult to get calls through on regular phone lines. In this case, try using the following means of communication.

Emergency Messaging Service 171
If an earthquake of magnitude 6 or higher strikes, NTT's emergency messaging service 171 will be activated. Those who want to check on the safety of other family members should first try using this number.

[Recording and Listening to Messages]
(1) 171 – To record a message, dial "1."
To listen to a message, dial "2."
(2) Dial your home telephone number or the telephone number of the person you are trying to reach, starting with the area code first.
Ex: (xxx) xxx-xxx.
If using a push button phone, dial "1#."
If using a rotary phone, please stay on the line.
(3) After you hear the beep, the system begins recording (max. 30 seconds) or you can listen to a message.
If using a push button phone, dial "9#."
(4) Hang up.

Public Telephones
Public telephones are your best option in the case of an emergency. Calls are more likely to get through on public telephone lines than on regular home telephone lines.

Text Messaging Function of Mobile Phones
In the case of a major disaster, it will be difficult to get calls through using mobile telephones, which have come into more widespread use than standard telephones. However, text messages are said to have a higher likelihood of getting through.
