Information on daily life -Transportation-

Using the train or subway
Tickets for the trains and subways are sold by automatic vending machines. Using the large map above the ticket machines in the station, find the station that you wish to travel to and the corresponding fare, and then put money into the automatic ticket machine. As you insert money into the machine, the fare buttons will light up in sequence. Press the button corresponding to the fare to your destination. A ticket will be dispensed. If you have inserted more money than your actual fare, the machine will also dispense change.

The fare for a child of 12 or younger is half of that for an adult. Up to two children per adult can travel free of charge but for a third child, the fare for a child must be paid. You can also use prepaid cards in the vending machines. You may find these prepaid cards convenient. After you purchase your ticket, pass through the ticket gate, most of which are automatic in the metropolitan area. If the reverse side of the ticket is black or brown, it indicates that it can be used in an automatic ticket gate.

Using the bus
Buses to several destinations will use any one given bus stop. Confirm the destination or route number displayed on the front of the bus or ask the driver the destination before getting on. As the bus travels its route, the name of the next stop is announced. When you hear the name of the stop at which you wish to alight, press one of the stop-request buttons, most of which are on the window frames. The bus will stop. If there are no stop-request buttons, ask your driver.

There two types of fare payment, namely, when you board and when you alight. If the bus fare varies depending on the distance, you have to pay the fare when you get off. As change may not always be available, it is always best to have the correct change before you get on the bus. Ask the driver if you are not sure.

Season tickets, coupons, and prepaid cards
For the trains, season tickets and coupons are available, while season tickets, coupons, and prepaid cards can be used with the buses. All are cheaper than normal tickets. You can purchase these at the ticket counters of train stations and bus centers.

Using the taxi
You can get a taxi from the taxi rank of a train station or hail an empty taxi on the street. An empty taxi will display "Empty car (空車)" in red, inside its windshield. Raise your hand to hail the taxi. Note that an extra charge is added after 11:00 PM.
