Refuse disposal and recycling How to dispose of refuse

How to dispose of your refuse properly
Domestic refuse is collected from refuse repositories and is carried to the city's refuse disposal facility (Environment Center). After the refuse is collected, it is processed efficiently. Leading-edge pollution prevention measures are applied.
(1) Burnable refuse is collected three times per week and unburnable refuse once per week (metallic items and glass items are collected alternately). When you dispose of your refuse, note the following carefully:
Refuse is not collected on Sundays and on "holidays when refuse is not collected." Do not put your refuse in the refuse repository on these days.
Use polyethylene bags (transparent or translucent) so that the contents can be confirmed.
Put your refuse in the repository by 8:30 AM in the morning of the collection day (you must not place it in the repository in the evening of the previous day).
Tie up the bag securely.
Drain off water from the kitchen garbage.
Dangerous things such as razors, needles, and pins must be wrapped in a paper bag or the like. Write "dangerous objects" on the bag, and place it in the repository.
Twigs and branches (less than 12 cm thickness), wood chips, and blankets can be disposed as refuse provided you cut them into lengths of no more than 50 cm.
Portable gas cylinders and spray cans must be exhausted. Using a safe method, and in a safe place, make holes in the cylinders and cans, squash them in the center, and dispose of them on the collection day for recyclable refuse.
Used dry batteries must be placed in transparent or translucent bags and be disposed on the collection day for metallic refuse.
(2) Large items such as articles of furniture and electric appliances (other than TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and PCs) must be brought to the Environment Center directly. If this is impossible, apply the Refuse Collection Section to arrange collection (Phone: 225-2793).
Disposal is free of charge. (There is a handling fee of ¥100 per item if you bring them to the Center, however, or ¥500 per item for collection.)
(3) The city will not collect large amounts of refuse that may be generated when you move house. Bring in to the Environment Center after sorting or ask a pickup company to deal with it (for which a fee will be charged).
(4) The city collects dead bodies of animals such as dogs and cats for a small charge (¥2,000 per body). Also, the city collects the dead bodies of dogs and cats found on the road free of charge.

* You cannot dispose of refuse generated by a business (example: refuse from offices, shops, small shops, restaurants, etc.) at a domestic refuse repository. Instead, you must either contract with a general waste disposal company, licensed with the City of Atsugi, to dispose of your refuse, or bring your refuse to the Environment Center yourself. (You can bring in only burnable refuse (garbage, etc.) and a fee of ¥20 per kilogram is charged for disposal.)
